How to Turn Your Child's Drawing Into a Video
A drawing your child is proud of can become a short video of that same character moving around. Most of whether it works well is decided before you upload anything - in how you photograph the page.
Photographing the drawing
Flatten the paper
Smooth out folds and curls. Raised paper casts soft shadows, and those shadows get read as part of the picture - a crease can end up as a line in the animation.
Find indirect daylight
Next to a window, out of direct sun, is ideal. Avoid shooting under a ceiling light: you'll lean over the page and photograph your own shadow with it.
Shoot straight down
Hold the phone parallel to the paper, not at an angle, and fill the frame with the drawing. A skewed photo makes the subject lean in the finished video.
Say what should move
Describe the action, not the picture. "The dragon flies over the castle" gives the model something to animate; "a drawing of a dragon" just describes what it can already see.
Works well
- ✓One clear subject rather than a busy, full page
- ✓Bold marker, crayon or felt-tip over faint pencil
- ✓Strong contrast against the paper
- ✓Simple backgrounds - sky, grass, a single room
Harder to animate
- –Very faint pencil that disappears against white paper
- –Six things happening at once with no clear focus
- –Drawings photographed at an angle or in shadow
- –Fine detail that's smaller than the pen line itself
What to expect
The video keeps the character, the colours and the style, but it reinterprets them - it isn't a frame-by-frame trace of the drawing. Simpler drawings tend to stay closer to the original, because there's less detail for the model to reinvent.
It's worth setting that expectation with the child before showing them, especially if they're proud of a specific detail. The surprise works better as “your dragon is flying” than as a spot-the-difference.
Try it with one drawing
From $1.99, no account needed. Upload the photo, describe what should happen, and you'll have a short video to download.
